Rhetoric and Democracy - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 2 Words: 640 Downloads: 2 Date added: 2019/02/15 Category Politics Essay Level High school Tags: Democracy Essay Did you like this example? According to Literary Devices, when someone is using persuasion they are influencing an audience by presenting their ideas through logic and reason. In our democracy this happens all the time and it is not always positive. Persuasion within a democracy happens using social media, new aged technology, and the power of others. Today in 2018 I will be the first of many to admit that I get an enormous amount of my world news from Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms. It is out with the old and in with the new. Just like big chain companies, local businesses, schools, and individuals the political circle is advancing and using these platforms as ways to reach more citizens in a shorter amount of time and it is both strengthening and weaking our democracy. It is always easier to point out what is wrong with something, so I will start there. Facebook has over two million users and not all of them are from the within the borders of the United States. Joining together Facebook, Twitter, and Google have found that Russian have created a large amount of posts some regarding elections and no part of them are true. These posts alone have reached over one hundred million people and all it did was fill them with false news. The thing is that if a trend was set then there is a great chance that American s followed it, let us just look back over all the uneducated challenges we have had. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Rhetoric and Democracy" essay for you Create order Politicians also use these platforms as a place to showcase the bad side of their running mates and what they expose to the viewers is not always accurate, but like the old saying says monkey see, monkey do, so naturally if a vast number of people are sharing or retweeting something we often think that it is true. When it comes to politics in our democracy today negative persuasion using social media is a big deal and for us to be knowledgeable voting citizens we must close the app and do some research of our own. Social media in fact can have positive persuasion on our democracy seeing that politicians can put ads and they can be seen by multiple people. This allows them to get their name out and share their story at in a shockingly fast time. One of the things I like the most is when politicians, normally elected, create pages where you can follow them and see what all they are doing. To me this is a positive act of persuasion since people can follow and keep up to date with all th e positives the politicians do, allowing them to form a bigger following. If we are not looking at a computer screen, then there is a chance that we are looking at a television screen and that is filled with all kinds of persuasion from the political advertisements to the televised political debates. When our democracy started to televise political debates it no longer matters so much what a politician was offering but rather what social class they fit in and what they looked like. Our democracy would rather have the attractive leader than one that stood for what they believe in. But just like with social media having televised advertisements and debates allows more voters and citizens to see the candidates. Televising the debates give more citizens the chance to see and listen to what each candidate has to say about different concern, matters, and their own platforms. As citizens in this democracy we must be educated on the idea that there is persuasion all around us even within the democracy, and that to be educated citizens we might have to put the phone down, turn the television off, and really listen and evaluate each candidate so that we can make the best possible decision.

History of Witches Signing the Devils Book

In Puritan theology, a person recorded  a covenant with the Devil by signing, or making their mark, in the Devils book with pen and ink or with blood.  Only with such signing, according to the beliefs of the time, did a person actually become a witch and gain demonic powers, such as appearing in spectral form to do harm to another. In testimony in the Salem witch trials, finding an accuser who could testify that the accused had signed the Devils book, or getting a confession from the accused that she or he had signed it, was an important part of the examination. For some of the victims, the testimony against them included charges that they had, like specters, tried to or succeeded in forcing others or persuading others to sign the devils book. The idea that signing the devils book was important is probably derived from the Puritan belief that church members made a covenant with God and demonstrated that by signing the church membership book.  This accusation, then, fit with the idea that the witchcraft epidemic in Salem Village was undermining the local church, a theme which Rev. Samuel  Parris and other local ministers preached during the beginning phases of the craze. Tituba and the Devils Book When the slave,  Tituba, was examined  for her supposed part in the witchcraft of Salem Village, she said she had been beaten by her owner, Rev. Parris, and told she had to confess to practicing witchcraft. She also confessed to signing the devils book and several other signs that were believed in European culture to be signs of witchcraft, including flying in the air on a pole.  Because Tituba confessed, she was not subject to hanging (only unconfessed witches could be executed).  She was not tried by the Court of Oyer and Terminer, which oversaw the executions, but by the Superior Court of Judicature, in May 1693, after the wave of executions was over. That court acquitted her of covenanting with the Devil. In Titubas case, during the examination, the judge, John Hathorne, asked her directly about signing the book, and the other acts which in European culture signified the practice of witchcraft.  She had not offered any such specific until he asked.  And even then, she said that she signed it with red like blood, which would give her some room later to say that she had fooled the devil by signing it with something that looked like blood, and not actually with her own blood. Tituba was asked if she saw other marks in the book. She said that she had seen others, including those of Sarah Good and Sarah  Osborne.  On further examination, she said shed seen nine of them, but could not identify the others. The accusers began, after Titubas examination, including in their testimony specifics about signing the devils book, usually that the accused as specters had tried to force the girls to sign the book, even torturing them.  A consistent theme by the accusers was that they refused to sign the book and refused to even touch the book. More Specific Examples In March of 1692, Abigail Williams, one of the accusers at the Salem witch trials, accused Rebecca Nurse of trying to force her (Abigail) to sign the devils book. Rev. Deodat Lawson, who had been the minister in Salem Village before Rev. Parris, witnessed this claim by Abigail Williams. In April, when Mercy Lewis accused  Giles Corey, she said that Corey had appeared to her as a spirit and forced her to sign the devils book.  He was arrested four days after this accusation and was killed by pressing when he refused to either confess to or deny the charges against him. Earlier History The idea that a person made a pact with the devil, either orally or in writing, was a common belief in witchcraft lore of medieval and early modern times.  The  Malleus Maleficarum, written in 1486 - 1487 by one or two German Dominican monks and theology professors, and one of the most common manuals for witch hunters, describes the agreement with the devil as an important ritual in associating with the devil and becoming a witch (or warlock).

Financial Analysis For Hotels Samples †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Financial Analysis For Hotels. Answer: Introduction The main objective of the report is to assess the investment cost for the major kitchen overhaul for one of their restaurant of Blue Ribbon Restaurant Group. The general manager will provide with the details of 5 potential contractors to discuss with them regarding the cost, expenses and cash flows. For analysing various offers from 5 contractors, the trainee will take into account various factors like present value of the cash flows, required internal rate of return. Comparison of assessment technique The comparison technique that will be applied to analyse the project from various contractor will be the (i) Net present value approach (ii) Internal rate of return Contractor Net present value Internal rate of return Supplier A $ 70,669.10 27% Supplier B $ 76,221.20 36% Supplier C $ 112,052.46 44% Supplier D $ 74,030.13 33% Supplier E $ 71,813.91 32% Net present value (NPV) The net present value is difference among the present value of the cash inflows and present value of the cash outflows. For analysing the profitability of any project or any investment, the NPV is used under the capital budgeting. The formula for NPV calculation is Where, t = number of times in period Ct = net inflow of cash during t C0 = Total initial cost of investment r = rate of discount The positive value of NPV states that the earnings generated by the investment or the project are more than the initial cost of investment. Normally, the project with the positive NPV is considered to be profitable one and with negative NPV as not profitable one (Vernimmen et al. 2017). The concept of NPV states that the investment or the project shall be accepted only if it results into positive NPV values. Further, the rate of discount that is 8% as per the given situation are taken into consideration to calculate the present value of the cash flows over the future periods. Though different companies determine the rate of discount in different ways, the common method is to use the expected return from other investments (Ross et al. 2013). As per the given information provided by the general manager regarding 5 suppliers and calculation of the NPV, it is recognized that the NPV of supplier C is highest at $ 112,052.46. Internal rate of return (IRR) IRR is rate of interest at which the NPV of all cash flow that is the negative as well as the positive cash flows from any investment or project equals to zero. It is used for evaluating the projects attractiveness or feasibility (Elango et al. 2015). If the IRR of the project or investment is more than the required return rate of the company then the project will be feasible and will be considered for acceptance. On the other hand, if the IRR is lower than the required rate then the project shall not be accepted. Formula for calculating the IRR is as follows 0 = P0+ P1/(1+IRR) + P2/(1+IRR)2+ P3/(1+IRR)3+ . . . +Pn/(1+IRR)n Where, P0, P1 Pn represents the cash flows for the period 1, 2, 3..n, and the IRR equals the internal rate of return for the project. IRR enables the managers ranking the projects through the overall return rate rather than considering the present values and the project that has highest IRR will be selected. As the comparison under IRR is easy, this approach is considered as attractive. However, the IRR does not takes into account the investments absolute size (Sneps-Sneppe 2017). As per the given information provided by the general manager regarding 5 suppliers and calculation of IRR, it is recognized that the IRR of supplier C is highest at 44%. Recommendation As the trainee is supposed to take into consideration all the possible techniques for assessment, from the given information he will consider the NPV approach and IRR approach to analyse the offer from the suppliers. As it can be identified from the above provided table that the NPV as well as the IRR of supplier is higher as compared to the other 4 suppliers, the company is recommended to select supplier C for the major kitchen overhaul for one of their restaurants. Buried Child Essay Example For Students

Buried Child Essay Its amazing what a secret can do to a person. Keeping secrets among friends can be fun, or helpful when you need to confide in someone you trust. Other secrets can do more harm than good. They can fester inside you and cause endless pain. In ;quot;Buried Child,;quot; this is the case. The family is permanently altered by their secret, which becomes a growing moral cancer to them, leaving each impotent in their own way. The play takes place on Dodges farm. About thirty years ago, the farm was fertile and prosperous. Dodge and Halie didnt have a wonderful marriage, however. Things took a turn for the worse when Halie became pregnant with someone else. It is suggested that Tilden is the father. The evidence to support this includes the fact that the baby was small, and that Tilden would sing to it and take it for long walks all day, just talking to it and treating it as his own. ;quot;Tildenwas the one who knew. Better than any of us. Hed walk for miles with that kid in his arms. Halie let him take it. All night sometimes.quot; (p. 124) Dodge would not allow this abomination to grow up and live in his family, so he drowned it, and buried it in the backyard. We can guess that this is when the farm ceased to be fertile, and fell into disuse. This is a symbol of the death of honesty and the birth of the familys terrible secret. Why exactly does everything go wrong for this family? We dont know exactly when the problems started, but we know that Ansel died on his honeymoon, Bradley cut off his own leg in a chain saw accident and is now mentally imbalanced, Tilden is nonfunctional and has been driven out of New Mexico, Dodge is a crazy old sick guy, and Halie is doing shady things with the preacher. Vince is the only person capable of facing the world and life, but he too is corrupted by the secret at the end. The answer to the question is that their secret, the dead child, is a secret festering them from the inside out. It is unclearhow long this moral degradation took, it may have taken years for all this to happen. We do know that it has left everyone impotent. Bradley is the most vivid example of this impotence. His false leg is his crutch, both figuratively and literally. With it, he has the most power of any of the people in the play. He maims and shaves Dodge with no repercussions, intimidates Tilden t o the point of making him run away, and he rapes Shelly by sticking his hands into her mouth. quot; With his free hand he puts his fingers into her mouth. She tries to pull away. BRADLEY: Just stay put! She freezes. He keepshis fingers in her mouth.quot; (p. 107) Without his leg, however, he no more than a sniveling infant. quot;Mom! Mom! Shes got my leg! Shes taken my leg! I never did anything to her. Shes stolen my leg!;quot; (p. 120) He cant even try to get it, just reach out and whine like a baby. He seems incapable of even adult reasoning. There is a major difference in the effect this impotence has on Bradley and Tilden. While Bradley denies the truth, telling Tilden he doesnt know, he wasnt born yet, Tilden is on an active search for the body of this child. Bradley wants the secret to remain a secret. Tilden wants it out in the open, wants the closure, even if subconsciously. Thats why he finds corn, carrots, and potatoes out in the fields, while Bradley and the others see only the rain. The land represents the soul, and is fertile for Tilden because in his way he is seeking to right this terrible wrong by revealing the child. When Tilden covers Dodge with the corn husks, but leaves his head uncovered, he is covering him with something good that the land, or in this case his maimed soul, has produced. He is trying to help Dodge to realize that the truth must be told. Bradley comes into the room and throws the husks off, shaves Dodges head and cuts him while he is helpless, like a punishment for the secret. Then he co vers him up, head and all, with the blanket. This shows a denial of the truth and a denial that it needs to be told. This situation could also have to do with life. Bradleys bruality could show that he wishes Dodge would die, so the secret would no longer matter. Tilden wants his father to live on and tell the secret, and be healed. .u752c54ff8fac4dfdd12e59c12fd1462e , .u752c54ff8fac4dfdd12e59c12fd1462e .postImageUrl , .u752c54ff8fac4dfdd12e59c12fd1462e .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u752c54ff8fac4dfdd12e59c12fd1462e , .u752c54ff8fac4dfdd12e59c12fd1462e:hover , .u752c54ff8fac4dfdd12e59c12fd1462e:visited , .u752c54ff8fac4dfdd12e59c12fd1462e:active { border:0!important; } .u752c54ff8fac4dfdd12e59c12fd1462e .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u752c54ff8fac4dfdd12e59c12fd1462e { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u752c54ff8fac4dfdd12e59c12fd1462e:active , .u752c54ff8fac4dfdd12e59c12fd1462e:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u752c54ff8fac4dfdd12e59c12fd1462e .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u752c54ff8fac4dfdd12e59c12fd1462e .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u752c54ff8fac4dfdd12e59c12fd1462e .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u752c54ff8fac4dfdd12e59c12fd1462e .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u752c54ff8fac4dfdd12e59c12fd1462e:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u752c54ff8fac4dfdd12e59c12fd1462e .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u752c54ff8fac4dfdd12e59c12fd1462e .u752c54ff8fac4dfdd12e59c12fd1462e-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u752c54ff8fac4dfdd12e59c12fd1462e:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: A plate of Swift served with a generous portion of satire EssayNo one else sees the crops because of the rain, which is a symbol of the secret. For all we know, it has been raining since the day the child was killed. The others cant see through the rain to see the truth, the secret must be revealed. After the secret has been revealed to Shelly, it stops raining and everyone sees the crops outside. They can see that it is better to not keep such a terrible secret. It is important that they tell an outsider the secret because it is a sort of cleansing to them. They are finally getting this terrible secret off their chests, so to speak. Soemtimes, realization comes too late t o help, though. In this case, Vince becomes corrupted and a member of this crazy family again. Dodge dies, but he has let the secret out, like the only thing that was keeping him alive was protecting the secret from outside view. Shelley leaves because she is an outsider and has no part of the corruption. It is interesting to note that no one remembers Vince until he is acting as crazy as the rest of the family. He is the only one who is capable of dealing with life outside the house. It is unclear whether or not he is different because the brunt of the degradation happened to the family within the six years since his last visit, or if the act of leaving and forcing himself to live away from the secret changedhim. He had no knowledge of the buried child until it was revealed, but the problems of his family members could easily have been passed on to him subconsciously by everyone else. Their actions could have had a profound effect on the way he thinks and acts. It is when Vince is accepted back into that family that Shelly realizes there is nohope for this family. They are lost. She then leaves them all to their permanent insanity. This shows that even though the secret was finally brought out into the open, it was too little too late. A terrible secret kept that long can tear a pers on apart.
